Crime and Punishment IELTS Essay Sample Answer
Some people debate whether criminals should always receive a set sentence for a specific act or whether the circumstances surrounding the crime should be taken into account before punishing the offender. This essay will look at both sides of the debate, but I personally lean toward the position that argues punishment should take into account the circumstances of a crime.
On the one hand, during the centuries of human history, criminal activity has greatly decreased. Fixed penalties for such horrific crimes as the death penalty and life in jail for drug trafficking serve as deterrents. Such brutal punishments ensured safety and stability in society because of their severity. For instance, several middle-income countries routinely rank near the top when it comes to obtaining a low-crime index because of their strict laws enforcing fixed sentences for certain offenses, according to a publication on criminal justice from the C.I.A. To protect the defenseless and hold the guilty accountable, however, is the basic goal of law and order. The primary goal of civil society frequently conflicts with fixed punishment.

On the other hand, prosecuting a criminal violates human rights, frequently without taking into account the circumstances that led to the act. Take Saudi Arabia, which is the nation with the lowest crime rate in the entire globe. Many human rights organizations have criticized the authorities for using a rigorous fundamentalist approach to prosecute convicts regardless of the circumstances of the crime. According to Amnesty International, even if offenders are wrongfully convicted, they are not entitled to fair trials. Last but not least, in my view, a convicted individual should only receive punishment depending on the specifics and seriousness of the offense. For instance, if someone kills in self-defense, the term should not be a life sentence.
In conclusion, I think that both sides of the debate—those in favor of and those opposed to set penalties—have valid points. However, I believe that punishments should be determined based on the individual circumstances of offenders and to deter future offenses.
