Program Overview
The University of Newcastle College of International Education Foundation Studies Program can be completed in either two or three trimesters and is designed to prepare international students for university study, both academically and socially. It provides access to over a hundred undergraduate degrees offered by the University of Newcastle. This streamed Foundation program will also help to increase your English and academic skills, making sure you are undergraduate study ready.

Leading to: Bachelor of Social Science (Human Geography and the Environment)
Social Science will empower you to gain a qualification that leads to rewarding careers in diverse fields. This degree will see you develop cultural sensitivity, ethical awareness and a solid understanding of the systems that define our world.
Social Science is the study of social relationships, structures and issues. Through core and elective courses, you will learn to analyse, challenge and gain insight into globally significant theories about:

- Crime
- Illness and health
- Work
- Social justice
- Social organisation.
You will also explore the exciting complexities of the human social experience. You will learn to apply the research methodologies of social science to the societies in which we exist.

Scholarships
CIE Program Scholarships
- Up to 20% tuition fee reduction on all CIE programs; amount varies on applicant’s background, e.g. high school grades.
Excellence Scholarships* - A$10,000/year
Available to students from the following regions once progressed to their University degree:
Africa, ASEAN, South Asia, or based Onshore (any nationality).
OR
International Excellence Scholarships* - A$15,000/year
Available to students once progressed into specific:
- IT & Computer Science programs
- Management, Accounting and Finance programs
Eligibility:
To be eligible for all Excellence scholarships:
- Foundation Studies and Express Preparation Program students need to achieve an average mark of 67%;
- Degree Transfer and Degree Transfer Extended students need to achieve an average mark of 50%; and
- Pre-Master’s students will need to achieve a Credit average when progressing into their University degrees.
Rest of the World Scholarship – 10% off tuition fees/year
- Students who do not meet the above eligibility requirements but have met the minimum progression requirements will get 10% tuition fee reduction per year –worth up to A$17,575 over 4 years.
