Foundation Studies Program (Standard)
Foundation Studies programs are a direct academic pathway to first-year undergraduate degree study, or equivalent. The programs act as a bridging course for international students who wish to study a university undergraduate degree course but don’t yet meet academic requirements and/or have the English language skills for tertiary study.

The Program is also designed to allow students to experience a focused study in an area of special interest or in specific disciplines that will better prepare them to study across the various sectors of their selected university course. It also helps students set and articulate goals and improve their self-management capabilities and confidence.

Major: Statistics and Decision Science
This major is aimed at people who have an interest in the mathematical modelling and analysis of real life systems using statistics, applied probability and optimization tools. From modelling global phenomena such as pandemics and climate change, to local problems such as the spread of wombat mange, the skills gained by studying statistics and decision science are widely applicable, easily portable, and highly valued in the modern workforce. Our research and industry connections will connect your studies to real-world applications. Your lecturers bring examples from live projects such as improving patient flow through hospitals, implementing maintenance schedules for infrastructure – even using machine learning to identify bird species from bush recordings.

Students can expect to get hands-on small group tutorial and computer lab teaching with plenty of contact with the staff. We pride ourselves on the collegial atmosphere between staff and students. Through the very active Maths and Physics Society you can get together with like-minded students, navigate the exciting challenges that come with undergraduate study, and make great friends along the way.
