The Assurance program focuses on the business aspect of IT and prospective candidates are expected to have a background in both technology and accounting/finance. You may be required to take additional courses as a probationary student in the program if you do not have all of the MISAM prerequisite courses but are otherwise admissible.


Program Objectives

  • To understand the process of auditing and in-depth knowledge of information systems auditing and general understanding of financial auditing.
  • To gain first-hand experience in conducting risk based information systems audits and in communicating the results to the enterprise.
  • To identify sources of risk for the loss of enterprise information and to develop methods of the financial resources available to mitigate these risks and provide assurance.
  • To gain a deep knowledge and appreciation of the role governance plays in the success of public and private sector organizations.
  • To understand the role of information systems security in relation to the other business assurance processes in an enterprise.
  • To develop a plan for the enterprise to recover from disasters and to test the plan in order to ensure that the plan is ready to be implemented when needed.
  • To investigate information systems security incidents and develop and implement solutions to recover or minimize any loss of information.
  • To develop an appropriate information security framework for an enterprise, including plans and policies which reflect recognized international standards from implementing security policy (based on identifying stakeholders, security teams and infrastructure, data resource owners, data custodians, and audit methods used to determine compliance).

Academic Requirement

  • Minimum Level of Education Required: To be accepted into this program, applicants must have Four-year Bachelor’s degree from a recognized educational institution, preferably in Business/Management, Accounting, Management of Information Systems or Computing Science.
  • Students with a three-year degree (for example, Concordia University of Edmonton’s three-year BSc) may be admissible but may be required to take qualifying courses.
  • A 3.0 GPA on at least two courses in financial accounting (one introductory and one intermediate) and one course in management accounting.

Scholarships

Master’s Academic Excellence Scholarship

Category: Graduate Students, Master level
Value: $2500
Application Deadline: Variable

A $2,500 award to full-time graduate students (Canadian citizens, permanent residents or international students) who are working toward the completion of a master’s degree at Concordia. To be eligible for a Master’s Academic Excellence Scholarship, recipients must:

  • Be registered full-time in a master’s degree program;
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3. A limited number of awards per program are available each year and those with the highest GPA will be selected. Any unused award allocations may be redistributed by the SAC to other eligible programs.
  • Not be receiving other awards totaling $10,000 or more in the current academic year.
  • Be registered full-time in the subsequent semester in order to receive payment of the award.

Concordia automatically identifies eligible students. No application required. Students may receive this award only once during their degree program. Students on an approved Leave of Absence may be eligible for a scholarship payment deferral. At the end of Fall term, the Financial Aid and Awards Office will identify eligible recipients and the Scholarship and Awards committee will approve final recipients.

 

University Entrance Scholarship:

The University Entrance Scholarship program provides guaranteed renewable scholarships to high school students who present a minimum award average of 75%. Scholarships vary in value according to the applicant's award average.

The final award average that determines the scholarship amount is calculated on the five academic subjects including English and the four highest eligible courses for your program from Groups A, B, or C (see Table 3.2.1.A).  Note: For students admitted using a Group D course, an award calculation using eligible courses from Group A, B, or C will be used to determine eligibility.

To become eligible for University Entrance Scholarships, applicants must be:

  1. entering their first-year of post-secondary study directly from high school. Concordia will also consider applicants who have:
    1. taken time off between high school and post-secondary studies
    2. completed university-level credits while in high school.
    3. attended a non-accredited program at a post-secondary institution and earned 9 or less transfer credits (e.g. bible school).Applicants who enrolled in a post-secondary institution after the completion of high school are not eligible.
  2. enrolled in a degree program in Arts, Management or Science.
  3. registered in a minimum of 80% of a full-course load (12 credits) in each semester. Recipients whose registration drops below the required 80% minimum will immediately forfeit their scholarship.

 

How do I apply?

There is no separate application required.  Concordia identifies eligible students through the admission process, choosing from those who submit their admission Application Forms and final (interim) high school transcripts before the appropriate deadline.  Eligible scholarship recipients are sent a preliminary scholarship offer notification letter.

 

How do I renew my scholarship?

To renew scholarships in subsequent years, students must:
 

  • Be registered in a minimum 80% of a full-course load (12 credits) in each subsequent semester.
  • Maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.2 for all scholarships valued below $3,750 or a minimum GPA of 3.5 for scholarships valued $3,750 or greater during the fall and winter semesters for the September intake, or the winter and subsequent fall semester for the January intake. Courses completed in Spring and Summer Sessions are not included in the GPA calculation.

The renewal period shall not exceed the length of the student’s degree program.  Students who lose their scholarship entitlement due to reduced course load or low GPA may have their scholarship reinstated following an academic period of study that satisfies the registration and GPA requirements. However, their eligibility period will not be extended.
