The two-year Carpentry and Renovation Technician diploma program prepares you for employment in the renovation and construction field, with sustainable design principles being key.

You'll learn new construction and building renovation skills, carpentry techniques, and new materials applications while gaining a solid understanding of the renovation-related trades. Hands-on training takes place in fully equipped labs where you'll practice framing and finishing techniques using sustainable design principles.

Note: When you enrol in the program in January, you need to complete semester 2 in the summer (May to August) of the same year in order to continue into semester 3 in the fall.

Your Field Education Options
This program offers two field placement opportunities in semester 3 and semester 4. George Brown works with employers and industry partners to identify potential work experience opportunities. Students are also strongly encouraged to pursue self-directed industry work experience opportunities they believe will provide the learning experiences they value and meet the learning outcomes of the program. This valuable work experience can in turn be added to your resumé.

Program Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Develop and use strategies for ongoing professional development to remain current with industry changes, enhance work performance and explore career opportunities.
  • Comply with health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with current legislation and regulations.
  • Assist in the preparation of material estimations and quotes and complete all work in compliance with the rights and conditions of contractual obligations, the Ontario and/or National Building Codes, applicable laws, bylaws, standards and ethical practices in the construction, renovation and conservation building fields.
  • Incorporate sustainability practices in the implementation of building construction, renovation and conservation projects in accordance with sustainable building guidelines.
  • Communicate and collaborate with diverse clients, supervisors, coworkers and tradespersons to complete projects on time and to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Interpret project plans and produce technical sketches and documents to support building construction and renovation projects.
  • Select and use technologies to obtain, organize and communicate building construction and renovation information.
  • Solve problems related to the implementation of building construction and renovation projects by applying the principles of basic technical mathematics, building design and building science.
  • Select, maintain and safely use hand tools, and portable and stationary power tools, when performing layout, cutting, fitting and assembly operations.
  • Complete building and renovation stages, from site layout and footings to the application of interior and exterior finishes, in accordance with blueprint specifications and conservation principles.
  • Select a range of materials and equipment for their appropriate application to building construction and renovation projects.
  • Schedule and assist in monitoring the progression of building construction and renovation projects by applying basic principles and strategies of project management.
  • Apply basic business principles and strategies to the operation of building construction and/or renovation enterprise.

This award is available to all registered international students at George Brown College in any year of study for all programs in this category

Kimokran (Toronto) Scholarship for International Students

Kimokran 16 Toronto Inc. has donated funds for the establishment of the Kimokran (Toronto) Scholarship for International Students. This award is available to all registered international students at George Brown College who are in their 2nd Year or higher for all programs in this category

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

Post-Secondary Scholarship for International Students - Certificate

The award is available to students in the Certificate, Post-grad program in any year of study.

Post-Secondary Scholarship for International Students – Diploma/Degree

Academic Area has donated funds for the establishment of the Post-Secondary Scholarship for International Students. The award is available to students in the Diploma or Degree program in their Second, Third, or Fourth year of study in an approved international work/study experience.

Scotiabank and the Scotiabank Bursaries

Scotiabank and the Scotiabank Bursaries have graciously provided $100,000 (100 bursaries at $1,000 each) for International students.

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Students must be registered in a full-time program
  • Students must demonstrate a financial need
Scotiabank International Partner Entrance Scholarships

The Scotiabank International Partner Entrance Scholarship is available to newly admitted students in their first year of study in any post-secondary (diploma, degree, or post-graduate certificate) George Brown College (GBC) program. Students from GBC’s academic partner institutions in the Caribbean, China, Central/South America and India are encouraged to apply.

Two scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded each academic year.


Qualifications

  • be an international student (required to have a valid Canadian Study Permit)
  • be studying in the first year of a full-time post-secondary program
  • possess an excellent academic record (3.0 cumulative GPA)
  • have demonstrated leadership in activities that have made contributions to the learning environment and participated in academic activities related to the area of study or student activities (e.g. clubs, Student Association, volunteer activities)
Woori Education Scholarship

Awarded to an international student based on academic performance and community involvement. To qualify, an applicant must:

  • be an international student with a valid Study Permit
  • be registered in a full-time diploma or degree program
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 in at least two full semesters of consecutive study
  • have participated in activities that have made a contribution to other students, their Department/School and/or the College community

Entrance Scholarship

George Brown offers entrance scholarships for eligible degree students based on academic achievement.

This is a renewable scholarship, which means that if you maintain a grade point average of 3.7 (80%) in your program, you will receive additional funding towards your tuition in future years.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You must meet the eligibility requirements for the scholarship at the time of your initial application and on Day 10 of the initial term of the scholarship.
  • Eligibility will be assessed by the Admissions department based on the grades used to determine the student’s admission score for the degree program. The student’s admission score, as calculated by the Admissions office, will be calculated to one decimal place.
  • Applicants with conditional offers of admission are required to meet the admissions conditions set out in your offer letter, or your offer and the scholarship could be revoked later.
  • You must be registered in, and complete, a full?time course load.
  • You must remain full-time in the program to be eligible for renewal.
  • Make sure to accept your offer and pay your tuition deposit by the deadline dates to receive this entrance scholarship.
  • Entrance scholarships are only eligible for the specific full-time degree program you've been accepted for and the entrance level/term on your offer letter.

For Fall 2025:

  • For the Fall 2025 semester, George Brown will be offering entrance scholarships for C305 degree completion students in their entry semester (Semester 5). These scholarships are for a total of $1200 (paid in two $600 installments-early in the fall and winter semesters after Day 10).*
  • This is a renewable scholarship, which means that if you remain enrolled in the Winter 2026 term (Semester 6), you will receive the additional $600 towards your Winter 2026 term tuition.
  • You do not need to apply for these scholarships. They will be credited to your GBC student account if you remain registered after Day 10 of each term.
  • These scholarships are offered to both domestic and international students.


To Qualify:

  • You must remain full-time in semester two to receive the second installment.
  • Make sure to accept your offer and pay your tuition deposit by the deadline dates to receive this entrance scholarship.
  • Prospects with conditional offers of admission are required to meet the admissions conditions set out in your offer letter, or your offer and the scholarship could be revoked later.
