Program Overview
Our program prepares you for the growing field of institutionalized equity and social justice responses to the challenges presented by an increasing fragmented and polarized world. As a HREQ student, you will examine the principles of human rights, the causes and impact of human rights violations, and efforts to redress past atrocities. Other areas of study include problems of physical, social and economic security, cultural autonomy, and political rights and fundamental freedoms.
What you'll learn
In order to understand human rights violations, we examine questions of equity, including ways in which race, ethnicity, citizenship status, gender, abilities and sexuality can make individuals more vulnerable, but also encourage them to build communities of resistance.
We acknowledge that human rights are not simply about the rights of individuals.The collective rights of minority and Indigenous groups - to practice self-determination on their traditional lands, to speak their Indigenous languages and to resist genocide -- are also central issues in our approach to the study of human rights.
- Course instructors explore critical theories and real-life practices in the areas of human rights and anti-Black racism.
Hands-on experiences
- Students see their own diversity reflected in our faculty, and in the issues addressed in course material.
- Faculty provide both in-class and community-focused educational opportunities by bringing in outside agencies and speakers.
- Fourth-year work-focused placement course provides HREQ majors with work experience at a partner organization (e.g.human rights commissions, school boards, non-profit organizations).

| Our entrance scholarships are available to domestic high school applicants admitted to a direct entry undergraduate program. This entrance scholarship is automatically applied, renewable at each year level, and can be regained when you recover the minimum required GPA. Recipients of this scholarship who elect to participate in an exchange program in years 2, 3 or 4 will also receive the York University Study Abroad Award, valued at $1,500. |
