This degree will give you skills and the practical learning you will need to address the pressing environmental issues we face — in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally.

Various disciplines of science intersect in this programme to create a layered understanding of complex sustainability challenges we face — for example in freshwater resources, marine contamination, coastal erosion, biosecurity, natural disasters, and climate change. You will assess impacts resulting from disasters, ecological change, and human activity.

The BEnvSci(Hons) is accredited by the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) to deliver environmental practitioners for roles in industry, government, education and research, and the community.

 

Major: Sustainable Coasts


With more than half of the world’s population living in coastal zones, many nations are dependent on the ocean to sustain life and economy. In this subject, you will learn how to manage our coastal and marine resources.

Aotearoa as an island nation has a unique history and cultural narrative with its coastal settlements and marine resources, and is a living laboratory for learning how to live sustainably.

Sustainable Coasts offers study in the diverse ecosystems, functions, and dynamic changes of coastlines and ocean life.

    University of Canterbury India High Achievers Scholarship


    Award Amount: $5,000 - $10,000 towards fees


    Brief Description:

    This scholarship recognises and supports international students with strong academic abilities from India who are beginning their educational journey in New Zealand at Te Whare W?nanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.


    Value/Benefits:

    • Undergraduate: Contribution to tuition fees of $5,000 paid in the first year of study. 
    • Postgraduate: Contribution to tuition fees of $10,000 paid in the first year of study.1
    • Level of Study: Undergraduate, Postgraduate
    • Closing Date: 15 November 2024 (Semester 1 2025 start) and 30 April 2025 (Semester 2 2025 start)
    • Tenure: One year
    • Number available annually: Varies
    • Applicable enrolment during tenure: Full-time study in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program at the University.


    Citizenship/residency requirements: Applicants must be:

    • New full-fee paying international students
    • Must be a citizen of India

    UC Business School Awards

    Confirmed for 2026 and still being processed for S2 2025:

    • $6,000 for master’s programmes
    • $4,000 for the first year of the Bachelor of Commerce (up to $12,000 overall)


    Almost 65% of new international students starting a business degree in S1 2025 received an award. They are applied as a tuition fee reduction and can be held alongside the UC High Achievers Scholarships.
