Program Overview

This degree teaches you to how to combine traditional filmmaking techniques with new technology – ensuring you’re ready to enter the fast-paced, ever-changing film industry.

In your first year, you’ll focus on the creative processes involved in film, television and media production – developing practical skills in screenwriting, directing, producing, editing and production management. In your second and third years, you'll focus on your chosen pathway, allowing you to pursue your interests in much more detail – gaining highly specialist industry skills.

You’ll choose one of three specialist pathways:

  • BA (Hons) Film & Screen (Film Production)
  • BA (Hons) Film & Screen (Screenwriting & Producing)
  • BA (Hons) Film & Screen (TV & Digital Media)

The Screenwriting & Producing Pathway:- The role of the writer is rapidly changing and, increasingly, they’re expected to direct teams through the entire production process.

For this reason, this pathway offers much more than a creative writing degree. Here, you’ll combine creative development with practical production skills and management expertise, learning about the commercial (fundraising, promotion, distribution) and production sides of the industry, too.

Your first year will be dedicated to gaining an overview of the industry, developing skills in screenwriting, directing, producing, editing and production management. In your second and third years, you’ll focus more specifically on screenwriting and production – learning how to write and produce a wide variety of works, including an industry-standard commercial and a one-hour TV drama.

As well as developing your practical skills, you’ll learn how to evaluate and refine your ideas, manage team expectations, handle the legal and financial aspects of the industry and budget, plan, shoot, distribute and market your films.
