Program Overview

International Foundation Year in Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities
The International Foundation Year in Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities is designed to prepare you for the first year of your undergraduate degree at Royal Holloway. This is a fast-paced, three-term foundation programme, specifically designed for international students interested in beginning their international education journey.

What you will study
The programme consists of core and pathway-specific modules. The core modules will improve your academic and English language skills, while the pathway-specific ones will build specific knowledge about your progression degree.

Once you have successfully completed your International Foundation Year and achieved the required progression grades, you will be well-equipped to start your undergraduate degree at Royal Holloway.

Leading to: Translation Studies & Comparative Literature and Culture with a year abroad BA

If you want to focus on gaining practical skills in translation alongside fluency in French, German, Italian or Spanish, as well as a globally-aware, creative, and critical mind-set, this specially designed four-year course is for you.

As a modern linguist, you will not only learn to speak and write fluently, you will also develop excellent communication and research skills. You will combine language proficiency with cross-cultural perspectives.

As a student of Comparative Literature and Culture, you will encounter art and culture from across the world, and learn about ways of approaching cultural material arising from different contexts and periods.

As a part of Royal Holloway’s close-knit international community based in our beautiful historic campus, you will be within easy reach of London with its wealth of cultural resources.

In your third year you will have the opportunity to spend time working, teaching or studying abroad, where you will immerse yourself in another language and culture, truly broadening your horizons in the process.

  • Whether you are an advanced or native-speaker level student when you start, by the time you graduate you will be fluent in your chosen language, confident in reading, understanding and analysing text and able to write with ease and accuracy.
  • On graduation you will have learnt about theories and practices of translation and will have practised applying what you have learnt throughout your degree.
  • You will combine ability in translation and linguistic competence with a global mind-set and an ability to think critically and creatively about cultural products.
  • Our research staff are engaged in research at the highest level internationally; we are in the top 10 of UK Modern Languages departments for research quality, assessed by grade point average (THE REF, 2021).

Regarding funding: Royal Holloway has been successful in every application to the Turing Scheme. We will continue to apply for funding in each cycle to support student mobility.

From time to time, we make changes to our courses to improve the student and learning experience. If we make a significant change to your chosen course, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.
