Program Overview

International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering
The International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering leads to a wide range of undergraduate degree engineering and science degrees at the Sheffield.

What will you study?
This is a 1.5 or 2-semester programme that will be tailored to prepare you for your chosen undergraduate degree at Sheffield. Programmes have been developed in collaboration with the University so modules are relevant to your field of study. You will develop the academic and English language skills needed for undergraduate study. Some modules will be compulsory for progression on to specific degree programmes at the University.

Once you complete your International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering and achieve the required grades, you can enter your undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield.

Leading to: Financial Mathematics BSc (Hons)

This course is designed to give you the numerical skills and specialist knowledge for a range of roles in finance. You’ll learn about the tools, principles and practices of the finance industry, as well as the fundamental mathematics behind banking, insurance, accountancy and more.

The maths modules in first year cover the essentials you’ll need for the rest of your degree – calculus, algebra, data science and more. You’ll choose from a range of specialist finance modules by taking either an economics pathway with the Department of Economics or a management pathway with Sheffield University Management School.

In second year, you’ll continue to build a powerful toolbox of mathematical techniques, such as stochastic modelling, which you can apply to increasingly complex problems in finance. You’ll also be able to examine other advanced finance topics, such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and corporate finance. There are also modules from pure and applied maths that you can choose from.

By third year, you’ll have the skills, knowledge and experience to go in lots of different directions in finance and mathematics. You’ll still cover the essential mathematics you need for a career in finance, and continue to take modules from your economics or management pathway, but we’ll give you lots of optional maths modules to choose from too. This means you can study the topics that you’re best at, that will be most useful to the career path you want to take, or that you enjoy the most.

These module options are based on the expertise of our maths lecturers. This means you’ll be taught by mathematicians who are working on the latest advances in the area of maths that you’re studying. There are also lots of opportunities, such as summer research placements, where you can work with our mathematicians to tackle a complex research question.
