Program Overview

What does the good life look like? What is real? Is there such a thing as a soul? How do you know things? These kinds of questions have been answered by figures from Confucius to Plato. Aristotle to Augustine. In this major, you will explore their answers and learn to formulate your own. With an emphasis on comparative and critical thinking, this is a major that can prepare you for multiple career paths. And, it will make you more thoughtful, cultured, and wise!

As a CMU Comparative Religion and Philosophy major, you will have opportunities to:

  • Gain experience in both Eastern and Western philosophical traditions, being exposed to classical thinkers like Plato, Aristotle, Confucius, and Zhuangzi.
  • Compare and contrast different religious and philosophical systems in classes focused on issues like cults and conspiracies, the nature of the self, evil across culture, the meaning of life, the philosophy of death, and sex, gender, and religion.
  • Learn critical thinking through the basics of formal and informal logic. Build your own arguments. Strengthen the coherence of your own beliefs.
  • Build skills by developing theories, leading discussions, justifying claims, understanding validity, considering counter arguments, and embracing a variety of interpretations.
  • Become prepared for careers in international business, politics, academia, law, and global travel.
  • Receive the preparation needed to pursue an advanced degree, if desired.
