Program Overview

When you understand what we eat-and how it can influence our health and other parts of our lives-you can start to influence change. This major is for students whose interests go beyond having a passion for food and cooking, and instead want to focus on nutrition as a science. It’s a program designed for people who like biology and chemistry, and are looking for a degree that can help them stand apart in a wide variety of fields. Whether you want to help people one-on-one or find ways to improve the health of entire communities, this is the place to start.

Learning Outcomes

The Nutrition Science BS will prepare students for a variety of career pathways, including dietetics, food science, and for entry into health profession programs.

Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will be able to:

  • Majors will demonstrate competency in basic nutrition knowledge and principles.
  • Majors will communicate nutrition principles effectively.
  • Majors will discuss the role of nutrition in human health and disease risk and prevention.
  • Majors will integrate principles of physiology and biochemistry with decisions about nutrition prescriptions and recommendations.
  • Majors will apply principles of microbiology to food safety.
  • Majors will discuss the global nutrition infrastructure and disparities in food access and nutrient sufficiency in communities within the US.
  • Majors will apply effective written and oral communication skills in translating and disseminating their nutrition science knowledge
  • Majors will identify and evaluate various sources of nutrition information to determine credibility and use evidence-based guidelines to make nutrition recommendations to prevent disease and to improve health and human performance.
  • Majors will demonstrate proficiency of knowledge in nutrition, physiology, biochemistry, and public health that can be applied to specialized areas of study, such as sport and exercise nutrition or public health nutrition.
  • Majors will describe how a background in nutrition science prepares them for a variety of future professional possibilities.
  • Majors will demonstrate active participation and collaboration with their peers and with individuals and organizations throughout the UB and Buffalo communities.
  • Majors will demonstrate cultural competence and respect for working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and show appreciation for individual perspectives that are different from their own.
  • Majors will describe how the fundamental scientific concepts and principles of nutrition apply to improving the health of individuals and how these principles are influenced by biological, environmental and sociocultural factors.

    Transfer Scholarships

     

    BUF has confirmed the transfer scholarships below for Shorelight students.

     

    • Transfer students will be awarded a scholarship based on the GPA criteria below:
      • CGPA 2.5-2.99: $3,000 per year, $1,500 per semester
      • CGPA 3.0-4.0: $6,000 per year, $3,000 per semester
    • GPA is based on BUF's GPA conversion, not on the GPA listed on the transcript
    • These scholarships are awarded up to 4 semesters (2 years) total
    • A transfer student at BUF is anyone who has university coursework from an accredited (academic, NOT vocational) college/university, regardless of credits taken.
