University of Canterbury Scholarships

UC offers a range of scholarships every year to help fund our students' study. Some recognise academic excellence and sporting achievements, while others focus on social inclusion and are awarded on the basis of hardship. Search the scholarships available and apply online.

UC offers over $20 million in scholarships and prizes annually to help fund our students' study.

UC understands that a university education is a major investment for you and your family. A scholarship might just provide the helping hand you need to make university life a little easier.

UC offers a range of scholarships, many recognising factors like academic excellence or sporting achievement. Others have an emphasis on social inclusion and equality and are awarded on the basis of financial need or other hardship.

School Leaver Scholarships

If you plan to enrol in your first year of an undergraduate degree at UC next year, we recommend you apply for one or more of our School-Leaver Scholarships.

Each scholarship has different eligibility criteria like subject area, level, and qualification. Find out more and apply.

School-Leaver Scholarships are available for application annually. If you are planning to enrol in your first year of an undergraduate degree at UC next year, it's worth applying for a scholarship (or two!) to fund your studies.

School-leavers scholarships are available specifically for:

  • M?ori and Pasifika students
  •  
  • Students who can demonstrate leadership potential
  •  
  • Students with financial hardship or other personal circumstances
  •  
  • Students moving away from home to study at UC (with accommodation costs)


We recommend you apply for all the scholarships you are eligible for, as it is possible to be awarded more than one scholarship at a time.

Undergraduate scholarships

UC offers a diverse range of scholarships to support students studying an undergraduate degree. You can also visit Universities NZ to learn about national scholarships you might be eligible for.

The University of Canterbury realises that funding your studies is no easy feat. To address this, we have several scholarships on offer for current undergraduate students to assist their financial needs and provide a helping hand to make university life a little easier.

Postgraduate scholarships

UC offers a number of scholarships to support students studying at a postgraduate level at Te Whare W?nanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Are you thinking of Postgraduate* study in 2025? We have a number of Postgraduate Scholarships closing mainly between 15 October and 2 December for study in 2025.

Begin your search using our Scholarships Database, using the filters such as 'Level of Study' and 'Faculty/School' depending on what you are planning on studying. Click through to the scholarship's Regulations to check that you meet the eligibliity criteria and you can also take note of the selection criteria for the scholarship.

 All scholarships need to go through a review process each year, so although they are listed, they may not show application dates until they are confirmed. Once a scholarship is confirmed as being offered, the scholarship will open for applications approximately eight weeks prior to their closing dates.

Equity scholarships

UC is committed to developing a diverse, culture-rich, cooperative environment for everyone studying at Te W?nanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

To support this, UC offers a number of equity scholarships to encourage the greatest possible participation and maximise the educational potential of all students, with particular emphasis on those groups in those communities that are under-represented among the students of the institution.

Scholarships for international students

UC offers a range of scholarships for international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Whether you're already in New Zealand or overseas, there are several scholarships available. Search and apply for an international student scholarship.

The University of Canterbury has scholarships available for international students who are:

  • Currently studying at secondary level in New Zealand
  • Curently studying at UCIC but intend to enrol at UC the following year
  • Planning on studying any undergraduate degree at UC but are still overseas
  • Planning on studying any postgraduate degree at UC but are still overseas

    Scholarships for women

    UC actively encourages women to pursue their academic goals, particularly in fields where there is underrepresentation. Search and apply for one of UC's scholarships for women.
