Studying abroad is an excellent way to expose yourself to new cultures,
make new friends, and generally broaden your horizons. However, there
are a few essential things that one must consider before doing so.
Here is a list of 13 essential steps to help you prepare better for your study abroad venture.
1. Make sure all your documentation is in order. Also, be sure to scan
your documents and make copies of them, so you have proof of them if you
lose your original documents.
2. Don't forget to have your health checkup done before you leave, and
also bring a copy of your medical records in case of an emergency.
3. Pack smart, and don't get any unnecessary luggage along with yourself.
4. Try to learn the language of wherever you are relocating to. It will
help you assimilate better into your host country and make your stay
more easy and comfortable.
5. Research your destination's local culture, history, economy,
geography, government, etc., to make your study abroad experience more
enriching.
6. Be sure to set up an online account as it will make your monetary
transactions extraordinarily smooth and easy. Most international
travellers use debit or credit cards to get cash in the local currency.
7. I highly recommend carrying some extra cash with you as a
precautionary measure, and this will be invaluable in case of any
unforeseen contingencies.
8. Get a local number for your cell phones and guard against opting for
an international plan for your mobile as it is way overpriced and
untenable.
9. Be prepared mentally for your journey, and expect the unexpected.
While studying abroad, you will encounter people from different cultures
and beliefs. Be ready to be dynamic and adapt to these changes without
being judgmental.
10. Know how to get in touch with your country's embassy. Keep their contact number on you at all times.
11. Have a good understanding of your host country's laws as what is not
considered a big deal in your country can be regarded as quite
dangerous in another country.
12. It's essential to learn about food and drink safety when travelling
abroad. It's best to know about any health risks related to food and
drinks in your host country.
13. Find local connections in your travel destination as they may prove
invaluable during a crunch. Talk to your friends or other people you may
know as they may have contacts that may prove immensely helpful to you.
