Tips for scoring high in CELPIP Speaking Test

Following are some of the best tips students can use to score high on the CELPIP Speaking Test:

• Regularly Speak English

As it’s an English-speaking test, one must be used to speaking English. Students can practice speaking English with their friends and family. Otherwise, they can talk with someone they met on a bus or at a grocery store. By doing this, candidate will be confident enough to speak English.

Candidates can start from just 10 minutes a day and gradually increase the time as they get comfortable. This habit will give them multiple benefits. First is to become comfortable and speak confident English. Second, during the test, they won’t have to act like it’s the first time they are speaking in English. Applicants wouldn’t have to talk to English suddenly. That will come naturally.

Read Instructions Carefully

Students will be given time to read the instructions at the start of the test. Ensure to go through them and understand what needs to be done in every question. Then, think about what to write in the answer and proceed accordingly. If there is a specific scenario given, imagine being in that, which will help in answering the question better. This will reveal the creativity as candidates will speak about what they would have done if they were in the character’s place.

• Give a complete answer

When attempting the question, ensure to speak enough so that the rater can assess the speaking proficiency easily. Try to give detailed, relevant answers to every question while keeping the timer in mind. Also, don’t speak for just the sake of speaking; speak if it makes sense. Don’t forget to take pauses to gather thoughts and then talk.

• No Repetition

Avoid repeating the words as they look weird, and the examiner may think that candidate has a limited vocabulary. Use synonyms and paraphrasing to say the same thing. Remember, the raters will rate based on more unique words and phrases one uses. Use different words having the same meaning to make a long answer. Think a little before speaking so that one won’t repeat the words and tell something new.

• Accent doesn’t matter

Students are often concerned about their accents, but it doesn’t impact them. Candidates will be judged based on vocabulary, grammar and how they respond to the prompts rather than the accent. The accent is not an issue if other things are on point.

• Manage time well

The CELPIP Speaking test is 15-20 minutes, and a student has that much time only to impact the rater. An excellent way to beat the clock is by utilizing the time given at the beginning of the test. After getting the prompt, one will have time to brainstorm and collect all ideas. Use that time properly and make sure that they finish speaking on time. Speak as much as one can and take all ideas out.

• Speak naturally

Before the start of the test, students will be given a chance to test the voice. After listening to that, they can decide at which pace, volume and tone they must speak and try to speak with the same voice throughout the test. There will be a microphone on which they have to speak, so make sure to speak directly to the microphone to avoid any issues. Be calm, and don’t get nervous. Speak in natural voice. Speak clearly with appropriate pauses so the rater understands the words. Practice in own voice every day and make it more clear. It would help to have a hold on the voice during the speaking test. Do voice modulation and then choose the correct sound for the speaking test.
