If you don’t yet meet the entry requirements for the UC course you’re aiming for, UC College’s diplomas –  also known as higher education diplomas – will provide you with an introduction to your chosen study area. They act as an alternative entry pathway for admission to UC undergraduate courses and prepare you for university study.

Diploma of Communication
Are you interested in advertising, public relations, journalism or media and arts production? Are you an international student? If so, our Diploma of Communication is the perfect pathway to many exciting careers.

By studying our Diploma of Communication you will:

  • Be supported in building language and academic skills for further studies
  • Get direct entry to the 2nd year of a many bachelors degrees
  • Develop a good understanding in key cultural areas
  • Develop the professional expertise to enter and confidently contribute to the communication industries.

On successful completion of the Diploma of Communication, you’ll receive up to 24 credit points (one year) of advanced standing into the second year of Bachelor of Communication and Media (Sports Media) at the University of Canberra.

Bachelor of Communication and Media (Sports Media)
If you love sports and telling stories in equal measure, then UC’s Bachelor of Communication and Media (Sports Media) is for you. You’ll explore the media’s role in the reporting of sport and its influence on Australian society and the broader global context.

Throughout this highly practical media course you’ll learn how to research, produce and present sports stories in text, visual and audio formats for mobile, online, social, broadcast and print media. You’ll also report on ‘live’ sporting events that often captivate the nation and the world, interview elite athletes and coaches, and host your own podcast and TV panel show.

Study a Bachelor of Communication and Media (Sports Media) at UC and you will:

  • Evaluate the public interest and cultural importance of sports journalism
  • Produce insightful and engaging reporting that demonstrates an understanding of the Australian and global sporting landscape
  • Instinctively adapt sports journalism concepts and skills to diverse media and corporate environments
  • Critically apply knowledge and judgement in the production of multimedia sports content in fast-paced environments.

Work Integrated Learning
Exclusive Work Integrated Learning opportunities exist thanks to the course’s distinctive location in Canberra and relationships with professional sporting clubs and organisations. You’ll undertake a compulsory six-month internship as both a digital media producer for a sporting organisation, and as a sports journalist in a media newsroom. Previous internship hosts have included the Canberra Times, Canberra Raiders, ACT Brumbies, Capital Football, Basketball ACT, Fox Sports, Cricket ACT and AFL Canberra.

You’ll graduate career-ready with an exceptional portfolio of published work, including news stories, videos, podcasts, photography and even your own website. Past sports media graduates have found employment with companies including FIFA, Swimming Australia, ABC Grandstand, ABC TV news, Cricket Australia, Sky Sports, Cycling Australia, Fairfax Media and Netball Australia, among many others.

    Scholarships

    International Scholarships 2023 T3 & 2024 T1/S1 : Up To $6,000

    Early acceptance scholarship: Up to $2,000

    • Students MUST accept and enrol by 1 Sept 2023 (T3) & 8 Jan 2024 (T1/S1) to receive the scholarship.
    • UC College will offer a one-off $2,000 scholarship for International Foundation or Diploma Programs, or Graduate Certificate in Academic Foundations (GCAF).
    • Available to both onshore and offshore international students for Trimester 3, 2023 & Trimester 1/ Semester 1, 2024 intake only.
    • Students must remain enrolled until Friday week 4of class (after census date) to be eligible.

    Academic Merit Scholarship: $4,000

    • Students who have weighted average mark above 70% or comparable in their final year of secondary school.
    • $4,000 tuition fee reduction on International Foundation or Diploma Programs at UC College.
    • Available to both onshore and offshore international students for Trimester 3, 2023 & Trimester 1/Semester 1, 2024 intake only.
    • Students must remain enrolled until Friday week 4 of class (after census date) to be eligible.

    ELICOS Scholarship

    • 15% Scholarship on ELICOS weekly rate for international students when packaged with a UC College and/or University of Canberra courses.
    • Scholarship available for all intakes in 2023 and intakes before 30 June 2024.
    • Sponsored or diplomatic students are excluded.

    Terms & Conditions

    • Limited places available for UC College scholarships. Scholarships are subject to change without notice.
    • Scholarship amounts are shown in Australian Dollars (AUD).
    • Scholarships cannot be transferred to other intakes.
    • Scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis and students may be eligible for more than one type of scholarship or bursary.
    • Sponsored or diplomatic students are not eligible.
    • Academic course is either a University of Canberra International Foundation Studies, UC College Diploma, or Graduate Certificate in Academic Foundations.
    • Students must remain enrolled until Friday week 4 of class (after census date) to be eligible.
