Program Overview

International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering
The International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering leads to a wide range of undergraduate degree engineering and science degrees at the Sheffield.

What will you study?
This is a 1.5 or 2-semester programme that will be tailored to prepare you for your chosen undergraduate degree at Sheffield. Programmes have been developed in collaboration with the University so modules are relevant to your field of study. You will develop the academic and English language skills needed for undergraduate study. Some modules will be compulsory for progression on to specific degree programmes at the University.

Once you complete your International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering and achieve the required grades, you can enter your undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield.

Leading to: Mathematics & Philosophy BSc (Hons)

This course trains you to approach abstract problems in a reasoned, logical way. You’ll cover the same essential topics as other maths students, and choose from a range of options in philosophy that ask fundamental questions, introduce you to major thinkers and challenge your understanding of the world around us.

The modules in first year cover the essentials you’ll need for the rest of your degree – for example, calculus and algebra in maths, reasoning or ethics in philosophy. There’s less compulsory maths and more options, so you can choose whether you want to focus on fundamental topics like group theory and differential equations, or  maths applied to topics such as finance and data science.

Throughout your first two years, you will also be able to choose from a wide variety of optional philosophy modules, which range from religion, politics and the environment, to feminism, the arts and death.

By third year, you’ll have the skills, knowledge and experience to go in lots of different directions across both mathematics and philosophy. We’ll give you lots of optional modules to choose from, so you can study the topics that you’re best at, that will be most useful to the career path you want to take, or that you enjoy the most.

These module options are based on the expertise of our lecturers. This means you’ll be taught by mathematicians who are working on the latest advances in the area of maths or philosophy that you’re studying. There are also lots of opportunities in maths, such as summer research placements, where you can work with our mathematicians to tackle a complex research question.
