Program Overview
The Bachelor of Education qualifies you to be a teacher in Australia, and many countries overseas. Our evidence-based course draws on the Faculty of Education’s leadership and research in teacher education that is responsive to local and global contexts.
Graduates will be qualified as a teacher in one of the following five areas:
- Early Childhood/Primary (6 weeks to Year 6);
- Primary (Kindergarten/Prep to Year 6); English Primary Specialisation and specialisation in Science and Maths available
- Primary/Secondary (English Primary Specialisation and one Secondary specialisation);
- Secondary (Two teaching specialisations); or
- Secondary: Design and Technology (choose from Industrial Technology, or Food and Fibre, plus one Secondary specialisation).
The first year of the course provides a distinctive foundation with excellent grounding in literacy, numeracy, and subject content, as well as issues in contemporary education.
Specialisation: Primary/Secondary
For teaching in both primary schools and in secondary schools in one subject. Includes a compulsory English Primary Specialisation.
Professional Recognition
This course is accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and approved by the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) for Primary and Secondary initial teacher education in accordance with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

Scholarships
International Student Scholarships
The SCU International Scholarships, effective from 2nd September 2024. The existing scholarships will largely remain in place, with a few minor adjustments:
- A new International Merit Scholarship has been introduced, with no program restrictions. Students who meet the entry requirements are eligible. The International Merit Scholarship will be $5,000 for 2024 and will increase to $6,000 from 2025.
- The Vice Chancellor's Academic Excellence Scholarship ($8,000) and the Southern Cross Global Regional Scholarship ($8,000) will no longer be available for quota-restricted programs, including the Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood) and the Master of Nursing.
- The eligibility criteria for the Vice Chancellor's Academic Excellence Scholarship now require a minimum GPA of 5.5 or above, an increase of 0.5 points.
- The Vice Chancellor's Diversification Scholarships are also no longer available for quota-restricted programs; however, students enrolling in these programs are still eligible for the International Merit Scholarships.
International Student Scholarships
Southern Cross University offers a range of scholarships to support international students. These scholarships are designed to recognise academic excellence, promote cultural diversity, and encourage International Students to explore the opportunities at our regional NSW campuses.
How to apply
Students’ eligibility for Scholarships will be assessed by the Southern Cross admissions team at the time of application to Southern Cross. If you are successful, we will advise you in your Letter of Offer, along with the conditions of the Scholarship. Eligible students will only receive one of the following scholarships.

Vice Chancellor's Academic Excellence Scholarship 2024 - $8000 per year*
For academically outstanding future international students in all fields of study. The key criteria are to exceed the academic and English entry requirements for the program and present themselves as an outstanding academic candidate.
Value: $8,000 maximum fee reduction per year for the duration of your program.
The course of study: Any undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at the Gold Coast.
Eligibility Criteria
- Apply to study for an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at either the Gold Coast, Lismore, or Coffs Harbour campus.
- Exceed the minimum admission entry requirements of the University with consistently high academic performance. Assessment of academic excellence will be undertaken by the Southern Cross admissions team on application to Southern Cross University.
- To maintain scholarship eligibility, students must pass all the requirements for all enrolled units in each Term. Students must be meeting the requirements of the program.
- Students must meet the attendance requirements of their program and visa conditions to remain eligible for the scholarship
Selection criteria: Decisions to offer a student a place on the Vice Chancellor’s Academic Excellence Scholarship will be determined against the following criteria:
- Candidates' previous academic history and other meritorious achievements may be considered as part of the selection process.
- All other eligibility criteria must be met – ATAR 75 (all courses have different ATAR scores to be converted, so kindly contact the Assistant Recruitment Manager to know the scholarship criteria).
No separate scholarship application form will be required.
Southern Cross Global Regional Scholarship 2024 - $8000 per year*
Southern Cross Global Regional Scholarship supports undergraduate or postgraduate international students studying at our Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses at Southern Cross University.
*This is based on standard full-time international student enrolment of 8 units per year.
Value: $8,000 maximum fee reduction per year for the duration of your program.
The course of study: Any full undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at either the Lismore or Coffs Harbour or the National Marine Science Centre campus (No GPA required. You must meet the entry requirement of the course only.
Eligibility criteria: Students wishing to apply for the SC Global Regional Scholarship are required to satisfy the following criteria
- Apply to study an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at either Lismore, Coffs Harbour, or the National Marine Science Centre campus.
- Meet the admission entry requirements of the program you have applied for. Assessment of eligibility for this scholarship will be undertaken by the Southern Cross admissions team on application to Southern Cross University.
- To maintain scholarship eligibility, students must pass all the requirements for all enrolled units in each Term. Students must be meeting the requirements of the program.
- Students must meet the attendance requirements of their program and visa conditions to remain eligible for the scholarship.
- Citizens or permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand are not eligible to apply.
Selection criteria: Decisions to offer a student a place on the SC Global Regional Scholarship will be
determined against the following criteria:
- Application to study at Southern Cross University Lismore, Coffs Harbour, or the National Marine Science Centre campuses.
- All other eligibility admissions criteria must be met.
No separate scholarship application form will be required.
